Beamish

Beamish Museum is the UK’s largest open air museum, which tells the story of everyday working life in the North East through time. The museum is located in Stanley, set in a site of some 400 acres.

Beamish’s story starts in 1820, and runs through to the 1950s. Across the site, there is  mix of translocated, original and replica buildings, a large collection of objects, working vehicles and equipment, as well as livestock. A team of costumed staff and volunteers bring stories of North East heritage to life.

Beamish has received a wide range of awards since it opened to visitors in 1970 and has inspired ways of working in other museums.

Education is at the heart of what Beamish is and does. The museum welcomes over 40,000 children and young people per year on school visits. In recent years, it has developed a specialism in STEM learning, supported by funding from the Reece Foundation.
