Locomotion

Locomotion shows highlights of the national collection of railway vehicles in the world’s first railway town.

The town of Shildon in County Durham has had an exciting story to tell since the earliest days of the rail industry, making it the perfect place to explore the rich seam of local railway history and discoverΒ how the railways have changed all our lives.

Locomotion is now bigger and better than ever. In May 2024, we opened a brand new 47-vehicle collections building,Β New Hall, making Locomotion home to the biggest undercover collection of historic rail vehicles in Europe.

Locomotion is developing a strength in STEM learning, using the collection and the stories it tells to develop a wide range of learning activities, which also help to broaden our children’s ideas about what they might like to do when they grow up.
